The CNL:  Transforming Healthcare

Celebrate Certified CNL Day with the Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC) by exploring the impact and positive outcomes associated with the Clinical Nurse Leader. During this webinar, participants will discover how certified CNLs are transforming health care and nursing education, explore the importance of advocating for the CNL skill set, learn more about the value of achieving the CNL designation, and discuss how the CNL skill set transcends various work environments. This webinar is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn from CNLs.

Webinar Objectives

  • Explain the value of the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) to healthcare and patient outcomes.
  • Understand the importance of implementing CNL education programs.
  • Examine the many benefits that certified CNLs bring to a healthcare facility, including reducing costs and improving the patient care experience.
  • Identify examples of the impact of the CNL’s skillset in current work setting.
  • Explore a collaborative partnership with institutions offering CNL education programs and healthcare facilities.

Shantal H. Johnson, Director, CNC

Shantal Johnson has served as Director of the Commission on Nursing Certification since 2014. She has over 10 years of experience developing and managing professional certification programs. In addition to hosting CNC Radio, Mrs. Johnson, along with the CNC Board of Commissioners, is responsible for building awareness of the certified CNL and overseeing the CNL Certification Program. During her career, she has led the development of national education conferences, elearning programs, internship programs, benchmarking tools and career centers. Mrs. Johnson is a member of ASAE and ICE.

Speakers

Tobie H. Olsan, PhD, MPA, RN, CNL, NEA-BC, FNAP

Dr. Olsan is a Professor of Clinical Nursing at the University of Rochester School of Nursing (URSON). She received her PhD and MS (Nursing Administration) from the URSON. Dr. Olsan attended the first AACN education-practice partnership meeting launching the CNL and developed the first CNL program approved in New York State. She served as Specialty Director of the CNL program from 2014 – 2018. . She teaches courses about the CNL role, leadership, quality improvement, program evaluation, and interprofessional partnerships in the MS, Leadership Programs and in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program. Prior to obtaining her doctoral degree, Dr. Olsan was a nurse executive in acute care and long-term care.

 

Veronica Rankin, Ph.D, CNL, DNP, RN-BC, NP-C, CNL

Veronica Rankin serves as Director of Nursing Services and Magnet Program Director at Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center- Central Division in Charlotte, N.C. She also serves as the Administrator of the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) Program at this Magnet-designated Level 1 Trauma Center. Dr. Rankin has been a nurse for more than 16 years and a certified CNL for more than nine years. As a published author and member of various professional organizations, including Sigma International where she serves as President of the Mu Psi Chapter, Dr. Rankin’s primary career goal is to promote and advance the nursing profession. She earned her post-masters certification as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and a doctorate in nursing practice from East Carolina University, and her master’s as a CNL from Queens University of Charlotte. Currently, she serves as adjunct faculty at Queens University’s Graduate Nursing Program and regularly teaches CNL exam certification review sessions with CNL students.

Kris L’Ecuyer, Ph.D, CNL

Dr. Kris L’Ecuyer is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Pre-licensure Nursing Education at Saint Louis University Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing. She is a CNL educator and has served as the Administrator for a Model C (direct entry) and Model A (BNS-MSN) CNL programs. She is a national advocate for the CNL role, and has worked on numerous committees for American Association of Colleges of Nursing and the Commission on Nurse Certification regarding development of the CNL role, and administration of the CNL exam. She has contributed to promotion of the CNL role through scholarship and research, and numerous presentations.

Holisa C. Wharton, Ph.D., MS, RN, CNE, CNL

Dr. Holisa C. Wharton is the Dean of the William Preston Turner School of Nursing at Lander University in Greenwood, S.C. She has been a nurse educator for 17 years, beginning her teaching career at Piedmont Technical College in the Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing programs. In addition to serving as Dean, Dr. Wharton is an Associate Professor of Nursing and teaches a first-year seminar course for nursing majors, including CNL Practicum I and Leadership in Health Care in the MSN-CNL program. She initiated the collaboration with Self Regional Healthcare that culminated in the Clinical Nurse Leader Partnership (CNLP) Program—a joint education venture where Self Regional provides 80 percent of tuition for registered nurses enrolled in Lander’s MSN-CNL program. In addition, Lander faculty and nursing administrators of Self Regional created a practicum learning experience that allows the registered nurse to earn practicum hours and gain leadership experience as CNL Interns. Dr. Wharton completed her bachelor’s degree in Biology at Wofford College and Nursing degree at the University of South Carolina Upstate. She holds a master’s degree in Nursing Education and a doctorate in Healthcare Genetics from Clemson University.
